Herbal medicines relieve dyspepsia
A Chinese herbal formula appears to offer symptomatic improvement in patients with functional dyspepsia , according to a Chinese study. The formula used was a modified version of Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang (半夏泻心片), the active ingredients of which have previously been shown to reinforce the protective function of the gastric mucosa, regulate gastrointestinal function and induce anti-inflammatory action against Helicobacter pylori. One hundred and one patients with functional dyspepsia all of whom had received the TCM diagnosis ‘cold and heat in complexity syndrome’, were randomly assigned to two groups and given modified Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang decoction or placebo for four weeks. Compared with patients in the placebo group, patients who took the Chinese herbal decoction group showed significant improvements in dyspepsia symptom scores.
A meta-analysis of published trials has concluded that the Chinese herbal formulae Liu Jun Zi Tang (六君子片) and Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang (香砂六君子片) may not only be more effective than prokinetic drugs in the treatment of functional dyspepsia , but may also result in fewer side effects. Fifteen papers (1149 participants) were judged suitable for inclusion in the analysis, which was carried out by Chinese authors. There was evidence that both Liu Jun Si Tang and Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang led to increased symptom improvement compared with prokinetic drugs. No adverse events were reported in the Liu Jun Si Tang or Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang group in any of the analysed RCTs.
Efficacy of modified ban xia xie xin decoction on functional dyspepsia of cold and heat in complexity syndrome: a randomized controlled trial. Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2013;2013:812143).
